TRIP HOST

Chris Smith - Los Angeles, CA

Chris serves as Founder | Chief Adventure Officer at Pride Adventures, shaping the vision behind each journey and bringing people together through thoughtfully designed travel experiences around the world.

Chris has been leading group trips and outdoor adventures for more than 25 years, with roots that trace back to growing up in Arizona as the middle of seven children in an outdoor-loving family. That early connection to the outdoors and to shared experiences shaped his approach to travel and community from the very beginning.

Before founding Pride Adventures, Chris helped build California Gay Adventures (CGA), creating space for LGBTQ+ people to connect through hiking, camping, and shared outdoor experiences. Over time, that community-first foundation expanded into broader group travel, while staying true to the same values of connection, inclusion, and fun.

Today, Chris focuses on shaping the experiences behind Pride Adventures trips and supporting the hosts and partners who help bring them to life. He believes the best journeys are the ones where people feel welcomed, supported, and connected long after the trip ends.

Trip Itinerary Overview

We travel together from Ho Chi Minh City to Bangkok, with the heart of the journey centered on Cambodia’s temples, history, and culture. From the Mekong Delta and the moving history of Phnom Penh to the awe inspiring temples of Angkor and the floating communities of Tonlé Sap, this journey blends meaningful cultural experiences, iconic landmarks, and time to connect as a small LGBTQ+ group. Each stop offers its own perspective, allowing us to experience Cambodia in depth while creating memorable moments together.

Days 1 to 2: Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam

Our journey begins in Ho Chi Minh City, still commonly called Saigon by many locals, where we come together as a group before setting out toward Cambodia. On our first evening, we gather for our Pride Adventures Welcome Dinner, creating space to connect and kick off the journey together. The following day, we head into the lush waterways of the Mekong Delta, where village life, local markets, and cottage industries offer a memorable introduction to the region.

This opening portion of the trip sets the stage for the adventure ahead, blending connection, culture, and a first glimpse into daily life along the Mekong.

Highlights: Pride Adventures Welcome Dinner, Mekong Delta day trip, village boat cruise, local cottage industries
Stay: Ho Chi Minh City hotel, or similar
Transport: Arrival on your own, private vehicle to and from the Mekong Delta
Meals: Breakfast and Welcome Dinner

We cross overland into Cambodia and continue to Phnom Penh, the country’s capital, where bustling streets, French colonial architecture, and life along the river create a memorable first impression. After arrival, we explore the city by cyclo, taking in the rhythm of daily life and the character of this fascinating riverside capital.

Our time in Phnom Penh also offers one of the most powerful and reflective experiences of the journey. Visiting Tuol Sleng Museum and Choeung Ek provides important insight into the devastating legacy of the Khmer Rouge and the resilience of the Cambodian people. This is a more somber cultural experience, one that adds depth, perspective, and meaning to our understanding of the country.

There is also free time to explore more of Phnom Penh at your own pace, with the option to visit markets, riverside cafés, or enjoy an optional sunset river cruise.

Highlights: Border crossing into Cambodia, Phnom Penh cyclo tour, Tuol Sleng Museum, Choeung Ek Killing Fields
Optional: Sunset river cruise in Phnom Penh

We continue through the Cambodian countryside to Siem Reap, gateway to the extraordinary temples of Angkor and one of the most vibrant stops on the journey. Over the next couple of days, we explore one of the most fascinating ancient sites in the world, including sunrise at Angkor Wat, the serene stone faces of Bayon, and Ta Prohm, the jungle wrapped temple made famous by the Tomb Raider film with Angelina Jolie. These temples are not only breathtaking in scale and beauty, but also deeply intriguing, remnants of a once powerful civilization whose vast cities were gradually reclaimed by the forest over centuries.

Walking among these ancient ruins is both awe inspiring and mysterious. Angkor still raises big questions about the people who built it, how this remarkable civilization flourished, and why so much of it was ultimately left behind. It is one of those rare places that feels both monumental and deeply human at the same time.

Siem Reap also brings a lighter, more playful energy to the trip. Alongside our temple exploration, we enjoy a traditional Khmer meal, our included Tonlé Sap floating village excursion, and an evening at Phare Circus, a creative performance that blends Cambodian culture, storytelling, and social impact.

This is also where we celebrate our Pride Adventures Pride Moment with a night out to support a local drag show, creating space for fun, connection, and a glimpse into Siem Reap’s welcoming LGBTQ+ nightlife scene.

Highlights: Sunrise at Angkor Wat, guided Angkor touring, Bayon, Ta Prohm, Tonlé Sap floating village, Khmer local meal, Phare Circus, Pride Adventures Pride Moment

We wrap up our Cambodia journey with a flight from Siem Reap to Bangkok, arriving in time to settle into our hotel and enjoy a final evening together in one of Asia’s most exciting cities. After checking in, we gather for our Pride Adventures Farewell Dinner, celebrating the experiences we have shared and the connections made along the way.

For those who want to keep the night going, the evening can continue with an optional night out exploring the famous Silom alleys, where host Chris can give you a fun introduction to one of Bangkok’s most legendary and wild nightlife districts.

Day 9 is a departure day, with the option to extend your stay in Bangkok through additional post trip nights.

For travelers joining our Vietnam trip prior to Cambodia, this journey connects naturally, with one day in between before the Cambodia departure begins.

If you are not joining the Vietnam trip, we recommend arriving in Ho Chi Minh City at least one day early to allow time to settle in before the group adventure begins. Pre nights are completely optional and available at an additional cost.

At the end of the trip, post nights in Bangkok are highly recommended for anyone who wants more time to experience the city. Our host will be staying on for extra nights, and we can help arrange simple post trip hotel options to make your stay seamless.

Additional details on pre trip and post trip hotel options will be shared once the trip is confirmed.
