Exploring Italy’s art, food, and coastlines through an LGBTQ+ lens — our guide to the best of la dolce vita.
Italy is timeless — every corner filled with color, flavor, and history. But experiencing it on an LGBTQ+ group adventure adds another layer of magic: shared laughter, inclusive community, and a sense of belonging that makes every piazza feel like home.
Over the years, our Pride Adventures journeys through Italy have uncovered the country’s iconic highlights — and a few lesser-known gems — from Venice’s quiet canals to the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast. Whether you’re planning your first Italian escape or returning for your fifth, here’s our guide to some of our favorite places, experiences, and LGBTQ+ cultural notes along the way.
🛶 Venice: Floating Magic & Artistic Traditions
Venice is where it all begins — a maze of canals, bridges, and reflections that look painted in light. Wandering through the floating city feels like walking through history, from the Doge’s Palace to St. Mark’s Square, where every corner tells a story.
One of our favorite highlights is visiting Murano Island for a glass-blowing demonstration. Watching molten glass transformed into art is mesmerizing, and it’s a perfect example of Italy’s devotion to craftsmanship.
Venice itself doesn’t have a large gay nightlife scene, but the nearby mainland area of Mestre offers a few lively options such as Trash & Chic and Juiceberry. Still, this city is less about nightlife and more about connection — gondola rides, evening spritzes by the canal, and moments that feel beautifully suspended in time.

🌈 Cinque Terre & La Spezia: The Rainbow Coast

Heading south, the coast gives way to one of Italy’s most scenic gems — Cinque Terre, a string of five fishing villages painted in pastel colors along the cliffs of the Ligurian Sea.
We base ourselves in nearby La Spezia, a perfect home base with easy train access to the villages. The Hotel Firenze e Continentale stands out here — modern, clean, and offering one of the best hotel breakfasts in Italy.
From La Spezia, it’s easy to spend a day exploring Monterosso al Mare, swimming in turquoise waters, or hiking the coastal trails connecting the villages. For those with more time, the secluded Guvano Beach has a reputation as a gay-friendly hideaway — remote, beautiful, and best reached by those up for a little adventure.

🎨 Florence: Renaissance Meets Romance
In Florence, every street corner feels like art — the birthplace of the Renaissance, alive with sculpture, culture, and the aroma of fresh espresso.
We spent hours in awe of Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia Gallery — every muscle, every vein, carved to perfection. There’s something intimate and humbling about standing face-to-face with one of history’s greatest masterpieces.
Another highlight was our day trip to Pisa, where our small group couldn’t resist the classic Leaning Tower photos before returning to Florence for an evening of aperitivo and laughter.
For LGBTQ+ travelers, Florence’s scene is cozy and friendly. We visited Queer (Borgo Allegri 9 R) — a stylish LGBTQ+ bar just steps from Santa Croce. It’s perfect for cocktails and vibes, and locals also mention Crisco Club for late-night dancing (it comes alive after midnight if you’re still up).

🍕 Naples & Pompeii: History Beneath the Streets

Southern Italy bursts with flavor, and Naples is no exception. It’s loud, lively, and absolutely irresistible.
We explored the Naples Underground (Napoli Sotterranea) — an entire world of tunnels, cisterns, and ancient passageways hidden beneath the city. Cool, damp, and lit only by small lamps, it was one of the most fascinating experiences of the trip.
Of course, no visit to Naples is complete without pizza — this is, after all, where it was born. After exploring, we shared slices on the street, surrounded by laughter and music echoing through Spaccanapoli.
From Naples, a short drive took us to the ancient ruins of Pompeii, a city frozen in time by Mount Vesuvius. Walking among its streets and homes was breathtaking — and larger than most of us imagined. We even toured the site in a light rain, a reminder that every Italian adventure brings surprises of its own.
For travelers looking to unwind, the local Sauna Blu Angels offers a relaxed space to recharge. In Italy, saunas tend to be social hubs that close around 10 p.m., making them a great early-evening option before dinner.

🍋 Sorrento & Capri: Coastal Charm & Limoncello Dreams
Perched above the Bay of Naples, Sorrento offers panoramic views and coastal calm. Our hotel, the Art Hotel Gran Paradiso, sat high on the hillside with sweeping views of the sea — a perfect setting to slow down and breathe in the salty air.
A highlight of our time here was visiting a family-run lemon farm, where we learned how the region’s famous limoncello is made. It’s part of G Adventures’ Local Living program, and though we didn’t stay overnight, it’s a wonderful way to experience Italian hospitality firsthand.
From Sorrento, we ferried to Capri, the island of timeless glamour. We took the chairlift to Monte Solaro, soaring above the island for views that seemed to stretch forever — a must-do for any visitor. Capri’s chic boutiques, seaside cafés, and inclusive energy make it a favorite for travelers of all backgrounds.
If you stay overnight, Anema e Core is the island’s most famous nightspot, known for live music and dancing that carries into the early hours.

🏞 Amalfi Coast: Nature’s Masterpiece

Few drives rival the Amalfi Coast, a winding road of cliffs, lemon groves, and sea views so stunning they almost don’t feel real.
We hiked the Path of the Gods, one of Italy’s most beautiful trails, offering views that left us speechless at every turn. Lunch at a local agriturismo — complete with homemade pasta and limoncello — rounded out a perfect day.
Smaller towns like Amalfi and Positano don’t have a defined gay scene, but they radiate warmth and friendliness. Whether you’re traveling with friends, a partner, or solo, it’s easy to feel at home here.

🏛 Rome: The Eternal City of Layers
Our Italian adventures often end in Rome, where ancient history meets modern pride.
Days here are spent exploring icons like the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, and Trevi Fountain, while nights bring the hum of conversation over wine and gelato.
We loved staying at Mama Shelter Rome, a vibrant and eclectic hotel filled with colorful art, playful design, and one of the best breakfast buffets in Europe. It’s a space that feels both stylish and welcoming — much like the city itself.
Rome’s LGBTQ+ life centers around Gay Street di Roma, just steps from the Colosseum, where Coming Out Bar and My Bar serve as the beating heart of the community. Just know that nightlife here starts late — most locals don’t arrive until after midnight!

🌈 Traveling Italy with Pride
Traveling through Italy as LGBTQ+ travelers is a celebration of authenticity and openness. While the country’s Catholic roots mean that gay nightlife can be limited outside the big cities, we found the people to be welcoming, curious, and kind wherever we went.
Italian nightlife also runs on its own rhythm — quieter early in the evening, then buzzing after midnight. For us, that meant more time spent exploring by day and relaxing over cocktails or long dinners by night.
And honestly, that’s the essence of Italian travel: connection, conversation, and savoring every moment together.
